What to See and Do
Kayaking - Explore Tata islands and paddle around rock formations at Able Tasman point or propel yourself to Wainui Bay where you can look for sea-life or picnic at one of the fantastic spots on the National Park coastline.
Wainui Falls is located in the western edge of the Abel Tasman National Park. The track starts from a car park in Wainui Bay, 20 km north-east from Takaka. Look for the sign on the road side approximately 300 metres after crossing over the Wainui River Bridge. The walk up to the falls takes about 45 mins and follows the river through native bush forest. Well worth the trip on a warm day and the falls are a welcoming and cooling treat. Wainui Falls Track
Rawhiti Cave has possibly the most diverse and extensive entrance of any cave in New Zealand. The flora influences the growth of calcium-based features in the cave; hence the stalactites on the cave ceiling grow outwards towards the sunlight. Some of the most significant features produced this way occur in the entrance slopes and cave floor, where they are usually overlooked and trampled by visitors. If you enter the cave, take care not to cause any damage: follow the marked route. The cave extends only a short distance into the hillside. Caution is required here - the floor of the gallery is steep and very slippery. Rawhiti Cave Route
Rock Climbing - Golden Bay is one of the best concentrations of single pitch sport climbing in NZ (there are also a few natural routes). It is also an incredibly beautiful landscape with plenty of other activities on offer. Golden Bay Climbing
